Abstract

Jaspers' book, The Origin and Goal of History, makes it clear that the "real and original axis" is found about B.C. 500 and that St. Augustine's construction "breaks down" (p, 259). Erb's remarks suggest Jaspers is more on the side of the saints than he really is. On the other hand the idea that "the lost are immortal" (p. 101) is rooted in Plato's arguments for natural immortality rather than in the Biblical teaching that immortality is the gift of God to the redeemed alone. Immortality in scripture is far more than the Platonic idea of mere survival of the soul after death. Dale Moody
