Abstract
Nowadays the concept of "vulnerability" covers a vertiginously widening semantic field. The paper aims at clarifying the meaning of the concept in social sciences. In other words, it aims at analysing the epistemological and political effects of the polarisation between an idea of vulnerability as synonymous with differential distribution of risks and a conception of vulnerability that refers to the unidesirable effects of human activities.
