Abstract
: Although the debate about demilitarization of the Brazilian police is in-tense, little has been discussed about its causes, dimensions and problems. In this article, we will describe the processes of organizational mimetism through which the Brazilian police were shaped by military organizations. Next, we will analyze four dimensions in which the police have increasingly differentiated themselves from the Armed Forces: (a) in relations. Finally, we will discuss the main obstacles and dilemmas for building a police identity.
