Abstract
One way to increase the useful life of low carbon steels is the application, through welding, of surface coatings with specific chemical compositions in the desired region of the sample. As it is a fusion welding process, microstructural changes occur in the material and must be considered. This work aims to evaluate the effects of the chemical composition of the coating and the type of electrical current on the mechanical properties of low carbon steels after application of chrome-based coatings (DIN E10-UM-60GR and E6-UM-60G). For hardfacing, the SMAW process was used, with the making of overlapping strands laterally. Abrasive wear and Vickers hardness tests were performed and, after analyzing the results, it was observed that the E10-UM-60GR electrode (with higher C and Cr contents) obtained superior performance, suffering less abrasive wear and obtaining an average hardness bigger. The use of the E6-UM-60G electrode generated strands with a lower degree of dilution and greater influence on the properties of the HAZ (heat-affected zone).
