Abstract
Undines and mermaids, mythical figures of undoubted fascination, have been both a source for literary narrative and artistic inspiration for painters and illustrators who have embellished these texts with their images. This essay focuses on Ondine, by La Motte-Fouque, and The Little Mermaid, by Andersen, as well as on Arthur Rackham’s artistic interpretation of these works.
