Abstract

Track width of slow Ne and Ar ions recorded in nuclear emulsions was photometrically studied. For β≦0.08, photometrical measurements are influenced by the grain noise, the inaccuracy of charge determination increasing with the decreasing residual range. It was found that Katz's theory of track-formation mechanism does not explain track structure at small residual ranges.
