Abstract

Abstract The last decade has seen a sustained interest by both psychologists and psychiatrists in sexual offending. To date, research into the mentally ill sex offender has been limited, with few empirical studies. Home Office statistics demonstrate a rise in numbers of both restricted and unrestricted patients admitted to hospital by sexual offence. These patients are usually detained under the category of mental illness within the meaning of the Mental Health Act 1983. Forensic psychiatrists are expected to possess an expertise in the assessment and treatment of this population and to address concerns about recidivism. The relevance of theories of sexual offending to the mentally ill is explored and consideration given to any role mental illness may play in the offence.
