Abstract
The usefulness of surface envelope substances (Al(OH)3, AlPO4, Al2(SiO3)3, Zn3(PO4)2, and ZnSiO3) and additives (Na2EDTA, MgSO4) on the stability of lanthanum bromide oxide phosphor against the action of water have been studied. The envelope substance forms a protective film on the surface of phosphor particles. The surface-treated phosphor particles were observed by scanning electron microscopy, and an X-ray photoelectron spectrometer was used to characterize the surface. The presence of surface envelope and/or additive improved the moisture resistance properties of the phosphor by decreasing the concentration of La(OH)2+ ion which acts as a catalyst in the hydrolysis of LaOBr.
