Expert systems in safety management. <em>Journal of Occupational Accidents</em>, 12: 63–78.</p><p>The development of computer support for safety and reliability analysis is reviewed, and the possibilities of knowledge based expert systems in safety management are discussed. Two areas are described in more detail: knowledge based safety analysis in process design, and knowledge based diagnosis and management of process disturbances in operation.</p><p>Knowledge based safety management is illustrated by two examples. The first one is HAZOPEX expert system aiding hazard and operability studies of process systems.
