Abstract
Offshoring is a business practice that has emerged in the academic literature as an important topic of internationalization since the 1990s. Although it is common in business routines, the number of studies that contemplate offshoring practices by startups is still scarce. This study aims to analyze the drivers that lead startups, incubated in the Unitec complex, to use offshoring, as part of the business strategy. To accomplish this objective, a qualitative field study was carried out, with an exploratory and descriptive character, made possible by interviews with five startups and later content analysis. Costs, access to quality and innovation are the main drivers of the offshoring activities practiced by incubates. In addition, the results validate the strategic value of this activity for startups. The professional experience of managers is an important aspect of the decision-making process related to offshoring practices.
