This remarkable polymer has been manufactured since the early 1950s, but because of its industrial importance, the production of HDPE continues to be a very active area of technology. In recent years, the worldwide recession, reduced and varying demand, overcapacity, and fierce price competition has stimulated polyolefin manufacturers to modify their existing facilities, making it feasible to interchangeably manufacture a variety of resins.
