Abstract
A new method for characterizing randomly branched polydisperse polymers is proposed. Measurements of sedimentation velocity and diffusion of the branched polymer at the θ point of the corresponding linear polymer give two apparent molecular weight distribution curves. From these curves the real molecular weight distribution curve can be obtained without any effect of branching, and the branching parameter distribution curve can be calculated. This new method has been applied to polystyrene—divinylbenzene copolymers; the results show that the method is very simple and useful for the characterization of branched polymers.
