Abstract

The present paper attempts to explore the ecocritical connotations of the selected poems of Emily Dickinson, a prominent nineteenth century American poetess. Nature is one of the most favorite subjects of Dickinson. More than 100 poems based on the same put the stamp upon it. The love for nature made her produce poetry which is no less than that of romantics. Although ecocriticism developed as a literary field in the late twentieth century, the world of nature had already begun to go through deterioration way before that. The Industrial revolution of the nineteenth century can be called the major cause behind the deterioration of the natural world. The poetry of Dickinson raises the awareness among the readers about safeguarding the natural world by depicting the harmony between nature and human beings coupled with the awe for nature. The paper attempts to explore the ecological consciousness that lies in the nature poems of Dickinson. The poetry embodies the harmony between nature and human beings. The aim of the paper is to evoke the ecological consciousness within people in order to appreciate the beauty of nature and protect the environment.
