Abstract
The i.r. spectra for HX,xH2O (X = Cl, Br; x= 1–4) and evidence for the existence of the complex HCl,4H2O are reported; the spectra of the dihydrates show the presence of a very strong central hydrogen bond in H5O2+, and other spectra indicate the presence of H2O, H3O+, or H5O2+ units, consistent with X-ray crystal structures.
