Abstract:Ruth Wilson Gilmore's work has made it possible for abolitionist concepts to resonate widely, enlivening collective imaginations about how life might be lived without mass punishment. But abolition itself remains, for many even on the political left, a perplexing concept: Why "abolish," rather than reform, violent and racist institutions?
