Retrospect and prospect of China’s ageing policy in the past 20 years

Abstract

ABSTRACT According to the Fifth National Population Census of the People’s Republic of China, by November 2000 there were 130 million people over 60 years old, accounting for 10.2% of the total population, and 88.11 million people over 65 years old, accounting for 6.96% of the total population. China turned into an ageing society according to international standards. Over the past 20 years since China was an ageing society, its ageing policy has been formulated based on national conditions and international experiences. It has also been innovated, improved and achieved remarkable results. The historic shift of national strategy has been achieved from focusing on the issues of the elderly to responding to population ageing actively.
