Abstract

A finite-element mathematical model of surface crack transformation of continuously cast slabs made of low-alloy pipe steels to sheet defects during hot rolling has been constructed. The transformation of axial, edge, corner and side cracks of the slab was investigated. It has been established that, depending on deformation conditions, surface cracks during rolling of the slab to a thick sheet can close in the first passes under the action of compressive stresses, move to the surface, form folds, twist towards the edge, or roll out completely.
