Abstract

A total petroleum hydrocarbon budget has been established for a coastal marine area of Denmark. Refinery effluent, minor spills, shop operations, waste-water atmospheric fall-out are the major sources. The hydrocarbons are removed from the area by advective water transport, degradation in the water body and the sediment, and evaporation. A significant part is accumulated in the sediments. The estimation of input and output shows 90% agreement.
