Abstract

Dementia is a syndrome due to a disease of the brain, which is usually of a chronic or progressive nature. The key to the assessment of dementia is a full and comprehensive history and mental state examination from the patient, and a collateral history from a carer or next of kin. A number of other investigations can help to identify the type of dementia, which provides information on prognosis and management. The management of Alzheimer’s disease depends on the setting, and must always include an assessment of risk, and support for families and carers. As the general population ages, dementia will become an increasing priority for health and social services.
