Colleges are trying to attract students in a time when there are fewer high school students in general, so they are trying to figure out how to maximize “profits” while still providing quality education. I hear terms such as “strategic enrollment management” being thrown around, without much regard as to how this will impact already overworked faculty. Faculty (particularly social science and humanities) at non-elite schools are seeing their salaries and benefits being cut as university budgets are being cut. Entire departments are having to leave.
