Abstract

This paper deals with the extraction of nitrato complexes of trivalent plutonium from aqueous phases of various compositions. It is shown that Pu(III) is extracted by tributyl phosphate (TBP) from nitric acid solutions as Pu(NO3)3.TBP up to a nitrate ion concentration of 1·2 M. The distribution coefficient of Pu(III) is practically independent of the hydrogen ion concentration under the conditions studied. The stability constants of Pu(NO3)3.3TBP, Pu(NO3)3, Pu(NO3)2+ and Pu(NO3)2+ have been determined as 0·75 ± 0·1, 14·4 ± 0·8 and 5·9 + 0·5, respectively.
