Abstract

Objectives

The sinus-lift procedure requires the Schneiderian membrane elevation which leads to inflammation and swelling of the sinus mucosa itself. This phenomenon is well tolerated only in healthy sinus where ventilation and muco-ciliary transport are intact. The aim of this study was to define the role and indications for functional endoscopic sinus surgery (FESS) in patients scheduled for maxillary sinus surgery.

Materials and methods

The literature on this topic was reviewed and compared with the clinical experiences of ENT specialists and implantologists.

Results

It was found that restoration of sinus health is necessary to provide a favorable clinical situation for sinus surgery, thereby reducing the risk of intra- and postoperative complications and related medico-legal litigations.

Conclusions

When sinus disease is suspected in a patient scheduled for a sinus surgery, the patient should be referred to an ENT specialist for a diagnostic evaluation and the resolution of the sinus disease with a medical or surgical treatment essential prerequisite for the success of the subsequent implant procedure.
