Abstract
In order to apprehend the effect of an exile, which lasted for more than half century, on the vocation of Norbert Elias (Breslau- 1897-Amsterdam 1990) and on his work, we should analyze the sharp tear caused by nazism, and the ambiguous relation between the sociologist and Germany.
