Abstract
This paper presents a brief history of post Second World War urban development in the United States as a background example with the objective of defining ways and exploring models for the re-introduction of nature into postindustrialized urban structures. Through observation and case studies, the authors discuss current applications of nature in urban settings. Drawing on theoretical constructs, a review of urban theories, architectural proposals, bio-inspired approaches, the framework of sustainability, personal projects and observation, an understanding of different stages of repurposed post-industrial environments is reached. A definition of this approach to urban re-development will provide a foundation for future applications.
期刊介绍:
The primary interests of The International Journal of Architectonic, Spatial, and Environmental Design are in building design, landscape design, and sustainable design practices. As well as papers of a traditional scholarly type, this journal invites presentations of practice—including experimental forms of documentation and exegeses that can be interrogated with equal validity through a process of academic peer review. For instance, this might take the form of a series of images and plans, with explanatory notes that articulate with other, significantly similar or different—and explicitly referenced—places, sites, or material objects.
