Integration of design data: interconnection is not enough

Abstract

Concurrent engineering has become the buzzword of the 90's. There are frameworks, architectures, tools, standards, and military handbooks all claiming to specify and/or provide a concurrent engineering environment. Most companies are scurrying to "install" CE within their companies. However, there are few, if any, large scale success stories to report. Most successes have been limited to small teams, or have been of limited scope. This paper addresses some of the critical issues that have largely been ignored regarding the implementation of CE. It suggests that a new modeling paradigm should be developed as a means to understanding how to best embed CE into our programs.<>
