Abstract
Extracranial internal carotid artery aneurysms are uncommon, accounting for approximately 1% of all peripheral arterial aneurysms. This nosology is associated with the development of such formidable complications as thromboembolism of the intracranial arteries and compression of the cranial nerves. This article is a review of the current literature data on the clinical course, diagnosis and treatment of aneurysms of the extracranial carotid arteries. Currently, due to the lack of randomized clinical trials, the question of choosing appropriate surgical policy for the pathology involved remains open. The purpose of the present study was to analyze the available literature data concerning the clinical course, diagnosis and treatment of aneurysms of the extracranial carotid arteries. Scientific publications were retrieved using such databases as PubMed, Scopus, Google Scholar, Web of Science and Russian Science Citation Index.
