Abstract
Of the numerous connections between oral health and pregnancy, only some are based in fact. Many still believe the old wives’ tale that a woman “loses a tooth for every baby,” and there is much conflicting advice as to if and when a pregnant woman should seek dental care. Current research is exploring the link between prematurity and periodontitis, a more serious oral infection that spreads beyond the gingival (gum) tissues to invade the supporting structures of the teeth. Babies born prematurely are at significant risk for neonatal death and serious and lasting health problems. This article shares important research findings regarding the emerging link between periodontitis and prematurity and how nurses can apply this information to their daily practice and personal lives.
