Abstract

Despite the relevance of 'white water' phenomena to hydraulic engineering, most progresses have been led by multiphase flow experts. In this paper the writer reviews the basic mechanisms of air entrainment : singular aeration and interfacial entrainment. He presents a ba-sic dimensional analysis and he discusses similitude and scale effects. The relevant instrumen-tation and data processing technique are detailed. Later recent progresses are discussed. It is the aim of this work to fill the gap between leading gas-liquid flow expertise and traditional hy-draulic engineering.
