Objectives

To determine the efficacy of a thrust technique in immediately reducing pain intensity in active abduction movement and in reducing painful sensitivity to pressure at the trigger points of the middle deltoid muscle.

Material and methods

A quasi-experimental pre-post intervention study was performed with two interventions in a single group of 20 volunteers of both sexes with upper shoulder dysfunction. Each patient acted as a member of the control group (non-intervention) and the test group (thrust technique). The test variables were analyzed statistically.

Results

Student's t-test, applied to the average pressure pain threshold at the middle deltoid trigger points before and after the thrust technique, revealed statistically significant differences (p < 0.05).The Kappa concordance between the three observers was 0.4669, indicating moderate concordance (0.41-0.60) among observers.

Conclusions

The increase in the pain threshold to pressure at the trigger points in the middle deltoid muscle indicates that the proposed thrust technique is effective in treating upward shoulder dysfunction.
