From the economic point of view and to avoid redundancy, it is desired, not to employ PSS on individual generators to overcome the problem of inter-area and local mode oscillations. The eigenvalue analysis of the power system for various areas is used to determine the inter-area and local mode frequencies and participation of the generators. It is also important to identify the generator that shall be installed with PSS. A simulation study on well-adopted test system is carried out, with various possibilities, to determine the optimal placement of the PSS.
