Transport is a key necessity of a vast nation like India. Today, India possesses the fourth largest railway network in the world. However, in terms of the safety parameters, we have not yet reached truly global standards. On analysis of the factors that cause these rail accidents, recent statistics reveal that approximately 60% of all the rail accidents have derailments as their cause, of which about 90% is due to cracks on the rails. The current method implemented for detection of track deformations to low speeds of around 20-30 kmph with high false indications, which limits the viability of testing many tracks regularly. To ensure safe, smooth and comfortable running of the vehicles over the track, track deformations have to observed and recorded. Amongst various deformations, track level and track gauge are those deformations which lead to unusual movement of a train coach in horizontal and vertical directions. For this, an IoT application “Cloud based Oscillometer” is developed using the latest digital technology to record the hunting oscillations of the coach and then compare it with the threshold values for monitoring and predictive maintenance.
