The traditional methods such as tree trimming, shield wire, lightning arresters, and different types of line construction address the root cause of distribution circuit faults. The automated approaches mainly reduce the duration of the outages through the addition of remote control. More robust applications of automation can reduce the number of customers interrupted as well as the duration of the customer outages. As deregulation in the electric utility industry expands, state utility commissions are looking to measure and control the reliability of electric service to all customers in their state. Automated approaches have been presented as a quick fix to reliability problems.
