These applications must also be flexible in order to meet new and changing requirements in a fast and cost-effective way. We have studied one such application-the Ericsson Billing Gateway. In order to reduce the cost for introducing new functionality, we broke up the application into distributable components. At the same time, we tried to keep the same or better performance characteristics. A prototype was implemented and compared to the existing application.
