His symptoms had begun a year before admission and had progressed to the point where he required crutches to walk. He had no history of trauma to his right leg, denied claudication of all other extremities, and had no symptoms of cardiac disease or cerebrovascular insufficiency. Physical examination was normal except for absent popliteal and distal pedal pulses in the right leg. The right foot was cooler than the left. Translumbar aortography revealed a normal aorta and iliac arteries.
