Dynamic bandwidth assignment (DBA) is necessary for EPONs to provide burst data services effectively. To focus on good fairness of bandwidth assignment, high bandwidth utilization, low cost and feasibility, a novel upstream DBA scheme for the Ethernet PONs is proposed in this paper. Issues of DBA design in EPON systems are investigated.
