Are the current challenges of democracy (eroding social consensus, emergence of populism, loss of trust in the political class) the result of problematic expectations inherent in the structure of democracy? To examine this question the following essay tries to analyse the implications connected with the democratic values of freedom, equality and self-government of the people.
