For this purpose, a Raspberry Pi is used as a gateway between a Siemens S7-400 PLC and the Amazon Web Services. The gateway has two main roles: OPC UA client and MQTT publisher. The PLC sends data to the gateway via OPC UA and the gateway transfers it to the cloud via MQTT publish-subscribe application protocol. The data is stored in the cloud-based database DynamoDB. As a result, with this rapid prototype, it is possible to gather and save data from the field that can be used for diagnosis, analysis, and predictive maintenance purposes.
