In recent times, the emergence of different modern technologies like machine learning, control systems, wireless networks, automation industries and embedded systems lead to an evolution of Internet of Things (IoT). Among the diverse applications of IoT, smart grids are a notable mention where communication between its components is critical. Consequently, the evolution of IoT is followed by numerous discoveries of smart devices with communication capability in both domestic and industrial fields. The IoT based smart devices can be differentiated based on their cost, size, ease of use and compatibility with the existing domestic or commercial electricity infrastructure. In this paper, we propose a small-sized low-cost smart load enabler (SLE) device that works in a client-server communication mechanism and capable of connecting to a conventional load like lights and fans without disturbing the existing electrical wiring. The proposed SLE device has the features of switching and power measurement of the load; also, allowing wireless communication between the server and load.
