Naturaleza ex situ: arcas de la biodiversidad

Conservar la diversidad biológica constituye un tema central en la actualidad, ante el creciente deterioro ambiental, el impacto del cambio climático y los modelos de sociedad basados en una perspectiva extractivista. En ese contexto, muchos zoológicos, jardines botánicos y acuarios históricos han comenzado un proceso de transformación. Convertidos en bioparques, redefinen sus propósitos. El objetivo de este artículo es reflexionar en torno al rol que tiene la definición de las colecciones biológicas en estas instituciones, tanto en el ordenamiento espacial de la exhibición (y, por lo tanto, del diseño del recorrido) como en la delimitación de los objetivos institucionales, que incluyen la implementación de programas de conservación ex-situ, su articulación con los sistemas de áreas protegidas y con el diseño de propuestas educativas que, bajo diversos formatos de la educación ambiental, comprenden el trabajo con escuelas y el público visitante. Con base en una perspectiva conservacionista, que sostiene la necesidad de un modelo sostenible de desarrollo y redistribución de la riqueza, se considera relevante la redefinición del rol de estas instituciones. Abstract The conservation of biological diversity is currently a central issue in the face of increasing environmental deterioration, the impact of climate change and the models of society based on an extractivist perspective. In this context, many zoos, botanical gardens and historic aquariums have begun a transformation process to become bio parks, redefining their purposes. The objective of this article is to reflect on the role that the definition of biological collections has in these institutions today, both in the spatial arrangement of the exhibition -and therefore in the design of the tour-, as well as in the delimitation of the institutional objectives that include the implementation of ex-situ conservation programs, their articulation with the systems of protected areas and with the design of educational proposals that, under various formats of environmental education, understand the work with schools and the visiting public. From a conservationist perspective that supports the need for a sustainable model of development and redistribution of wealth, it is relevant to redefine the role of these institutions.
