Mathematical Astronomy and the Production of Multiple-Texts Manuscripts in Late Medieval Europe: A Comparison of BnF lat. 7197 and BnF lat. 7432

: This article takes on the idea that, at least in some contexts, when producing manuscripts certain protagonists were learning, fostering and promoting mathematical astronomy. It also seeks to improve our understanding of the articulations between producing astronomical manuscripts and other astronomical practices in the specific context of late medieval Europe. In tackling this issue one is compelled to rely on approaches used within the history of mathematical astronomy and those of manuscript cultures. In so doing, I focus on two manuscripts both relating to the same protagonist: Conrad Heingarter, a fifteenth-century astrologer cum physician in France. By analysing the material, decorative and intellectual aspects of BnF lat. 7197 and BnF lat. 7432 I will re-veal how the first is a student manuscript produced during Heingarter’s university years, whereas the second is a presentation manuscript intended to show-case Heingarter’s competence in a specific courtly context.
