Paclobutrazol (PBZ) is an artificial plant growth regulator used to enhance flowering in reversed seasons. Paclobutrazol binds very strongly to soil organic matter, and its absorption into the soil increases with low soil pH. The residual PBZ concentration in fruits makes it difficult to export fruits, particularly mangoes, to discerning markets such as Europe, America, and Japan. Paclobutrazol was extracted from soil samples collected in this study and analyzed using high performance mass chromatography, yielding preliminary assessment results on residual PBZ content in 50 soil samples collected at mango plantations in Tien Giang, An Giang, Hau Giang, and Dong Thap. As a result, 8 fungal strains out of 115 isolated strains were able to survive in a culture containing solely PBZ as a carbon source. The capacity to digest PBZ was strong in two strains, HG 5.3 (92.69 %) and AG 11.1 (98.63 %). The results of morphological identification and molecular biology of the two selected species are Penicillium citrinum .
