OPTIMIZING RADIATION TREATMENT FOR CERVICAL CANCER
Since the 1920s, radiation has been used to effectively treat and cure cervical cancer. Major developments in radiation oncology technology have led to more accurate simulation of treatment fields with CT-based treatment planning and improved dose distribution of external beam radiation therapy (EBRT) to the target by linear-accelerator produced high-energy photons, three-dimensional treatment-planning systems, and conformal blocking techniques. The need for dose intensity with brachytherapy and reduction of overall treatment time has been established. This article reviews the technical factors of radiation for cervical cancer and explores ways to optimize dose delivery. Results of recently reported phase 3 trials of cisplatin containing chemoradiation regimens are discussed because their use has optimized pelvic control and survival for cervical cancer.
