The adventure of Islamism in Egypt

The chapter focuses on the evolution of Islamism and its reflections on Egyptian social and political structure through an order-based perspective, as Egypt has an exclusive place for the birth and development of Islamist thinking and movements. Starting from the fact that Islamism is a system of thinking which frames mind and perspective regarding political and social order, the chapter claims that Islamism and Islamic movements should be discussed in accordance with their references to the concept of order. In this regard, Egyptian experience of Islamists presents a clear vision to explain how they acted in the political system and interpreted international order in the modern era. Furthermore, the chapter discusses crossroads of Islamism in the country by referring to ideological disputes in the Muslim Brotherhood in 1930s and paradigm shift with increasing influence of Sayyid Qutb on youth in 1960s.
