Wide applicability and high run-time performance are primary goals of these extended specifications, which are realized by inheriting the design policy of the original specification that excessive virtualization of hardware should be avoided. The authors review the design policies of the ITRON specifications, and present how the policies are incorporated in the extended specifications.
