Electrification via Biogas in Malaysia: A Review
Renewable energy had taken a significant role to supply electricity nowadays. The vital fact about renewable energy is the energy infinitely replenished. Solar energy is the most popular source in Malaysia compared to wind energy, hydropower, biogas, geothermal, and others. Unfortunately, some of the renewable energy have not widely used even though they have a high capability to supply electricity. As Malaysia is the world’s second-largest producer of Palm Oil Mill Effluent (POME), hence it can be used to produce biogas. A study has been carried out to explore biogas ability to supply electricity in Malaysia. This study has been conducted in several contributing factors, namely geographical distribution, technology involved, and economic analysis. These factors will prove the feasibility of electrification via biogas. The review has been done by collecting the information and data from the previous studies such as journal and visits to official websites and related authorities that shows the current data and usage of biogas. The results show that biogas generation activity has been primarily promoted and produced due to sufficient waste products and modern technology used. In the last decade, the Malaysian government had actively involved in fostering biogas and built economy catalyst to pursue biogas by involving the private sector.
