Comparative analysis of split ring resonators (SRR), electric-LC (ELC) resonators, and S-shaped split ring resonators (S-SRR): Potential application to rotation sensors
This paper compares three different resonant particles which are useful for the implementation of metamaterials, planar microwave circuits and microwave sensors, namely, split ring resonators (SRRs), electric-LC (ELC) resonators, and S-shaped split ring resonators (S-SRRs). The three particles can be excited magnetically and/or electrically, under appropriate field polarization conditions. A transmission line, such as a coplanar waveguide (CPW), loaded with these resonant elements can be used as a rotation sensor, where the sensing principle is based on the variation of the notch magnitude with the orientation of the resonant particle. As compared to SRR-based rotation sensors, ELC-based sensors provide better linearity, sensitivity and dynamic range, although the electrical size of the ELC is larger. It is shown that the S-SRR combines the advantages of the ELC in terms of linearity, sensitivity and dynamic range, with an even smaller electrical size than the SRR. Preliminary results to demonstrate the potential of S-SRR-loaded CPWs as rotation sensors are provided.
