He suffered from recurrent severe hypoglycemia. An autopsy was performed after his death. Anti-insulin-like growth factor II (IGF-II) monoclonal antibody immunostaining of the hepatocellular carcinoma was positive. Western immunoblot analysis of the serum revealed highly elevated IGF-II.
