Challenges to use flexibility in low-voltage networks – results of a pilot project
The SERVING project aims to make flexible loads like night storage heaters and water pumps available to the market in such a way that it is ensured that the operation of these flexibilities will not cause contingencies in the network. Therefore an independent platform was established that provides a communication infrastructure for energy suppliers and flexibilities, estimates the low-voltage network state and schedules the flexible loads while considering grid restrictions. The system was tested in two pilot regions with night storage heaters and one region with water pumps. This study describes the SERVING system and its functionality, some of the challenges faced during the project phase and the ways they were solved. It also presents the results. It could be shown that reductions in energy costs are possible by shifting the loads in time without violating any grid restrictions but maintaining the comfort level for the customers.
