Presented paper deals with description of a device intended for use in patient's head position monitoring after vitreoretinal surgery. Keeping the head in an optimum position during the post-operation period is crucial for the whole recovery process to proceed well. A device helping the patient in maintaining proper head position was developed. The design utilizes modern MEMS accelerometers and a powerful RISC microcontroller. The main effort led to designing a compact battery-powered device design capable of warning the patient in case of improper head position. Application of high-level programming language made the whole firmware development process as effective as possible.
