The authors provide a guide to making a purchase decision on transformer replacement based on a reliability and economic evaluation. It is concluded that reliability should be included as a factor in the decision to replace or refurbish older transformers. An example of the economic analysis used in the case of replace/refurbish is presented. The key to using reliability as a planning aid is gaining enough data to generate confidence in the results.
